KEY POINTS

  • Eduardo Camavinga's contract with Rennes lasts until 2022
  • He made his senior debut for Rennes in 2019
  • France has picked him for the Tokyo Olympics

Manchester United are reportedly chasing to sign French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, who has been dubbed "the best young player in the world" by his agent Jonathan Barnett.

Manchester United are making progress in the transfer of 18-year-old Camavinga, who has been labeled with an asking price of around $36 million by his club Rennes, reported The Guardian. Camavinga has only one year left on his current Rennes contract and the French club does not want to lose him as a free agent in the summer of 2022.

Camavinga, who has also been rated highly by Manchester United star midfielder Paul Pogba, is also being chased by Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), according to sports media outlet talkSport.

Camavinga joined Rennes' youth system when he was 11. He rose through the ranks as he made his Ligue 1 debut in 2019 at the age of 16. He has been representing Rennes' first-team for three seasons now, having scored two goals in 82 competitive matches.

At 17 years, nine months and 17 days, Camavinga became the youngest player to receive a call-up from France's senior side since 1932 in August 2020. Coincidentally, he was called in as a replacement for Pogba, who had been sidelined after testing positive for COVID-19.

In October 2020, Camavinga made his first start for France's national team in their 7-1 win against Ukraine, where the young midfielder also scored his first international goal. He opened the scoring of the match with an overhead kick and that made him the youngest goalscorer for France since Maurice Gastiger in 1914.

While Camavinga was not part of the France national team at the Euros 2020, he has been selected to represent them at the Tokyo Olympics.

Overall, Camavinga has made 82 appearances for Rennes, across all competitions, since his maiden season 2018-19.

Meanwhile, it was previously also reported that after securing a deal for Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, the Red Devils are planning to sign a striker in the ongoing summer market and Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin is one of their top targets.
