KEY POINTS

  • Dayot Upamecano is focused on fulfilling his deal with RB Leipzig
  • The French center-back held talks with multiple teams for his transfer
  • Upamecano is not closing the door on a move away from Leipzig in the future

Dayot Upamecano can easily leave RB Leipzig for better opportunities, with Manchester United among the clubs linked to him. Given his talent, it comes as no surprise that several clubs are interested in his services. But for now, he prefers to concentrate on his commitment with RBL rather than think of a possible move out of Red Bull Arena.

The interest in Upamecano remains even after he signed a fresh lease with RBL in July. He agreed to a three-year deal worth $58 million but that has not fended off the transfer talk. So far, nothing is on the table, but the Frenchman is not entirely ruling out an exit from Red Bull Arena in the future.

“For the moment I am with Leipzig but it is true that I was able to discuss with certain clubs,” Upamecano told Telefoot on Wednesday, Sept. 23. “As I said, for now, I am focused on Leipzig and I will continue to play for Leipzig. And then we’ll see.”

The interest in Upamecano is understandable. He has improved since joining Die Roten Bullen in 2017 following an $11.7 million deal with Red Bull Salzburg. He has made 115 appearances for the club across all competitions. This includes aiding them in challenging for the Bundesliga and reaching the latter stages of the Champions League, Goal reported.

That performance got the attention of several clubs. Among those who are believed to have some interest in Upamecano are Arsenal, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona. But the club that is standing out in the chase for the 21-year-old center-back is United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is believed to be interested in Upamecano to bolster the defensive line of the Red Devils. ESPN reported, citing unnamed sources, that United turned its attention to the 21-year-old defender to play alongside Harry Maguire after the club sealed the deal for Donny van de Beek.

With top targets like Jadon Sancho getting dimmer, Solskjaer wants to focus on plausible players. However, with Upamecano's revelation that he held talks with other teams, the Red Devils may need to bump up their pursuit if they are determined to bring in the French defender.
