  • Frenkie de Jong is contracted with Barcelona until 2026
  • He joined Barca from Ajax in 2019
  • De Jong made 140 competitive appearances for Barca

Manchester United are expected to officially present Frenkie de Jong as their new player this weekend.

De Jong, who is contracted with FC Barcelona until 2026, is on the verge of joining Manchester United as the deal is in its final stages. The Premier League side could even unveil De Jong at Old Trafford as soon as this weekend, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg. However, International Business Times could not verify it independently.

A fee of around $90 million has been agreed by Barcelona and Manchester United, according to The Guardian. De Jong was initially skeptical about joining Manchester United as the club failed to get a Champions League spot. However, head coach Erik ten Hag has convinced the player to join the Red Devils.

Manchester United are currently in negotiations with De Jong's representatives over the player's personal terms, the report further claimed. The move would see De Jong reunite with Ten Hag, his former manager at Ajax.

Head Coach Ten Hag, who recently moved from Ajax to Manchester United, is looking to bolster the side ahead of the 2022-23 season and has made De Jong one of his top priorities.

While the 25-year-old midfielder has expressed on a number of occasions that he wants to continue at Barcelona, it looks like the club is forced to sell him to ease their financial struggles. Even Ronald Koeman, who managed De Jong during his stint at Barcelona and the Netherlands national team, recently shared his doubts as to whether the player wanted to move this summer.

"All I know is that Frenkie wants to stay at Barca. He said that a few days ago. But I don't know if Barca want or need to sell him because they need money. He is one of the few for whom a lot of money can be asked," Koeman said in a recent interview.

De Jong, who joined Barcelona in 2019, made 140 competitive appearances for the Catalans and scored 13 goals, apart from providing 17 assists.
