  • Man Utd paid $98 million for the center-back
  • Man Utd are close to signing Frenkie de Jong this summer

Manchester United have reportedly rejected a request from FC Barcelona regarding Frenkie de Jong's transfer in the ongoing summer window.

Barcelona had asked Manchester United to include their captain Harry Maguire as a part of De Jong's deal. However, the Red Devils have rejected that request, according to Sky Sports' "Paper Talk." However, International Business Times could not verify it independently.

Following a disappointing 2021-22 season, a number of defenders have been asked to leave Manchester United, including Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Axel Tuanzebe and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

However, the Red Devils are not ready as yet to part ways with their captain Maguire, who joined them on a huge $98 million deal in 2019. Maguire has had a decent run with the England national side and Manchester United's new boss Erik ten Hag believes he could solve Maguire's issues.

De Jong is contracted with Barcelona and has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United. Ten Hag has made De Jong one of his top priority signing for the ongoing summer market. The duo previously worked together at Ajax when they reached the semi-final of the 2018-19 Champions League, before losing to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Dutchman is contracted with Barcelona until 2026 and the club has labeled De Jong with a high asking price of around $91 million. It was earlier reported that when Manchester United approached Barca with a lower offer, the Camp Nou side instantly turned it down.

Nevertheless, the negotiations between the two clubs have progressed and De Jong is now close to moving to Old Trafford, 90Min reported.

Manchester United are expecting to seal the deal and announce De Jong's arrival by June 30, according to talkSport.

Meanwhile, Manchester United could also reportedly lose Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the 2022-23 season. The Red Devils failed to finish in the top four of the Premier League last season and were dropped down to Europa League.
