KEY POINTS

  • Mason Greenwood's appalling acts towards his girlfriend have led to his arrest
  • Manchester United already has options on-hand to replace his talent
  • Ralf Rangnick will need to sort out his squad quickly ahead

In a season wracked with troubles, Manchester United is dealt another blow after star striker Mason Greenwood was arrested and it could be his loss that becomes the club's biggest gain.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Greenwood was arrested by the Greater Manchester Police on suspicion of rape and assault of his girlfriend Harriet Robson, who released footage of Greenwood’s abuse to her social media.

Robson has since gone dark on social media, but a Reddit user was able to record the evidence levied against Greenwood.

Manchester United acted quickly on the situation and suspended the 20-year-old, stating that the club “does not condone violence of any kind” as tweeted by Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic UK.

Red Devils fans quickly took to social media and seriously hoped that he never takes the field again and his actions have since led to star goalkeeper David de Gea disassociating from Greenwood.

Their concern now turns towards the future of the club as many rightfully believed that Greenwood was going to be a major piece of their run towards competing for silverware, regardless of who is in charge at the club.

With Greenwood out of the picture for the foreseeable future, this immediately pushes Marcus Rashford to a feature role in upcoming games as a second option behind Cristiano Ronaldo on the attack.

Fans can also expect to see more of Anthony Elanga, who scored the first goal in their 3-1 victory over Brentford last January 19, and Jadon Sancho in the wings.

Sancho has not played in a game for Manchester United since their 2-2 draw with Aston Villa on January 15 after dealing with issues in both of his hamstrings plus a personal matter that kept him out of their most recent victory against West Ham United last January 21.

Greenwood’s off-field issues may also offer a redemption arc for the disgruntled Jesse Lingard, who has been campaigning for consistent playing time since returning from his loan to West Ham United last season.

While Greenwood is a massively talented player, his deeply troubling issues may have just sealed his fate at Manchester United and in the football world as a whole.

Manchester United will certainly be a team to look out for in the coming days as interim manager Ralf Rangnick will have to make some important decisions regarding how his team will lineup in their FA Cup fixture against Middlesbrough on Friday, February 4.
