Manchester United are set to intensify their efforts to sign Arsenal forward Robin van Perise and may be set to conclude a deal as early as this weekend. United's chief executive David Gill is poised to personally intervene to try and complete a deal with his Arsenal counterpart Ivan Gazidis in the coming days, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Sir Alex Ferguson spoke of his frustration on Wednesday at having their advances for Van Persie rejected by Arsenal, stating his belief that the Gunners were trying to negotiate with other parties. It is reported that United have already had offers of £10 million and £15 million rejected. The Telegraph reports that an offer in excess of £20 million may force Arsenal's hand, however, given that the Van Persie has informed the club of his desire to move to Old Trafford.

Though Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger would much prefer Van Persie to join overseas suitors Juventus, that looks an increasingly unlikely option. The Italian champions' manager Antonio Conte has just been handed a 10-month ban having been found guilty of failing to report alleged match-fixing during his time in charge of Siena.

The Manchester Evening News claims that Ferguson's desire to sign Van Persie has only been increased by the failure to capture Lucas Moura, who has instead moved to Paris Saint-Germain.

United striker Wayne Rooney is also keen to see the club snap up Van Persie.

"Of course he's a player that I admire," Rooney told the Daily Mirror. "He's a fantastic player, he's been amazing for Arsenal over many years. Last season was probably his best season of all; he scored a lot of goals. If he does come here he would be a great addition to the squad."

While Van Persie would represent the marquee signing United are said to be craving, Ferguson is also keen to strengthen his options at left-back. With Fabio moving on a season-long loan to Queens Park Rangers, Patrice Evra is now United's only established left-back.

The Daily Mail has come up with a couple of surprising options to fill that particular void at Old Trafford. Reportedly Ferguson has identified Malaga's Eliseu as a potential target. The 28-year-old Portugal international can operate either on the left-side of defense or on the wing.

According to the Mail, United are having a keen look at Malaga's squad given their current financial problems that have already prompted the sale of Santi Cazorla to Arsenal. With that in mind the Mail also speculates that United may be interested in regular Malaga left-back Nacho Monreal. The 26-year-old, who is said to be interesting Valencia, has been named in the latest Spain squad for their friendly with Puerto Rico next week.
