  • Liverpool is set to clash with Manchester United at Anfield Sunday
  • Reds manager Jurgen Klopp heaped praise on Red Devils midfielder Bruno Fernandes
  • Klopp explained why dethroning United isn't much of a motivation for his team

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp acknowledges the fact that Manchester United has signed a magnificent player.

Paul Pogba was the lone star who managed to lift United back on top of the English Premier League standings. With Liverpool now ready to reclaim its throne, Klopp thinks it isn’t Pogba who poses a serious threat ahead of the crucial match.

For the Reds boss, it is Bruno Fernandes who can possibly change the outcome of the game. According to Klopp, Fernandes had already surprised him in the past and has even become a better player now.

“He’s an outstanding player,” Klopp said of Fernandes in a statement on Liverpool’s official website. “Before he joined [Manchester] United, we played against Sporting in the USA on the tour and in that game already you could see, ‘Wow!’ Obviously everybody knew him but in that game it was the first time my team played against a team he was involved.”

“You could really see he was a difference-maker and that’s what he shows now,” he continued.

This season, Fernandes is United’s top goalscorer, having scored 11 times in 17 matches. Based on Klopp’s assessment, the Red Devils caught a big fish in the Portuguese midfielder, who is now a “very influential” figure at United.

“He is settled, he is a very influential player for United obviously, involved in a lot of things,” the manager pointed out. “I know people talk mostly about the goal involvements, which is very important stuff, but he is a link-up in a lot of other situations as well.”

“I don’t know him well enough to really judge that but he seems to be a leader as well,” he added. “So, yeah, a good signing, unfortunately, for United.”

As for the importance of Sunday’s match at Anfield, the German bared that ending United’s 11-game winning streak wasn’t really much of a motivation for Liverpool. Instead, Klopp insisted that his team has always been committed to winning regardless of the situation.

“Winning a football game and winning against United is enough itself, so it’s not necessary that there’s a special add-on,” the renowned coach explained. “We play at home against United and we want to win – that’s all we have to think about. There’s no extra add-on in that game because they are in the situation they are.”

“They got the points, they deserved the points they have so far, and we have ours,” he added. “The season is still a long way to go, so it’s not really in it that we talk now constantly about ‘If we win, we are ahead of them again’.”
