KEY POINTS

  • Manchester United defeated Newcastle 3-1 in the Premier League
  • Rashford, Fernandes and James scored for Red Devils in Sunday's game
  • Man Utd are 10 points behind league leaders Manchester City

Manchester United's latest record in the Premier League shows the Red Devils are very much alive in the title race and can be a threat to leaders Manchester City in the coming weeks.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side defeated Newcastle United 3-1 in their league meeting at Old Trafford on Sunday. With the crucial three points earned, Manchester United are now 10 points behind City in the league table.

In the 2020-21 campaign, Manchester United scored 53 goals in 25 games in the Premier League – their highest at this stage of a top-flight campaign since the 2012-13 season (60), which was the last time they won the title, according to Opta Joe.

Since losing three out of their opening six games of the 2020-21 Premier League, Manchester United have only lost one of their last 19 games in the competition (won 12 and drawn 6).

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring for the Red Devils against Newcastle with a 30th-minute strike before winger Allan Saint-Maximin netted the equalizer for The Magpies just a few minutes later. Soon into the second half at Old Trafford, 23-year-old Daniel James put the hosts 2-1 up and Bruno Fernandes sealed the game by converting a penalty at 75th minute.

It was Rashford's 40th goal across all competitions since the beginning of last season, with only Raheem Sterling (44), Harry Kane (45) and Mohamed Salah (47) scoring more among all Premier League players.

Meanwhile, Fernandes, who has been at the heart of their attack since his arrival to Old Trafford in January last year, once again proved to be significant. With 15 goals and 10 assists in the current campaign, Fernandes is only the third player within Europe's top five leagues in the ongoing campaign to reach double figures for both goals and assists in league matches, alongside Tottenham Hotspur's Kane (13 goals, 11 assists) and Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller (10 goals, 10 assists).

Manchester United's next fixture is the return leg of their Round of 32 in the Europa League against Real Sociedad on Thursday. The Red Devils thrashed these opponents 4-0 in the first leg last week. Following that, the Red Devils will travel to London to take on Chelsea in the Premier League.
