KEY POINTS

  • Man Utd thrashed Southampton 9-0 at home Tuesday
  • Rashford scored Man Utd's second goal in the game
  • He has now netted 83 goals for the Red Devils

Marcus Rashford, who netted a goal in Manchester United's 9-0 victory over Southampton in the Premier League, is three goals away from surpassing David Beckham on Red Devils' list of goal scorers.

With the goal against the Saints at Old Trafford, Rashford (83 goals) moved ahead of former Manchester United forward Eric Cantona (81 goals) and is two goals away from equaling Beckham's 85 goals in the Red Devils' jersey.

After Aaron Wan-Bissaka put Manchester United 1-0 up with his 18th-minute strike, Rashford doubled his side's lead after he picked out Mason Greenwood near the penalty spot.

Having scored 83 goals in 248 matches across competitions since his senior debut for the club in 2015, the 23-year-old is currently 14th on the list of Manchester United's leading goal scorers. The list is led by club legend Wayne Rooney with 253 goals, which the Englishman netted during his trophy-laded career at Old Trafford.

Reacting to his feat, Rashford said he just wants to keep scoring and helping his team win as Manchester United are aiming to win their first Premier League title since 2012-13.

"He's obviously a top player [Cantona] that's done a lot for this club so yeah I'm pleased to go past him and for me, I just want to score more goals and keep helping the team," Rashford said in an interview on Man Utd's official website.

"It's always good to score lots of goals and it’s three points that we needed. We’ve dropped some points in the last few games and we needed to get back to winning ways so today was a brilliant opportunity to do that. The first half really set the tone for us. From there when we've come in at half-time it's just about keeping the right mentality and a positive attitude really and going to finish a game and score more goals," Rashford added.

Manchester United equaled the Premier League record for the largest margin of victory in the competition's history with their 9-0 hammering of Southampton as seven different players scored for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side Tuesday night. With the win, the Red Devils have equaled the previous mark for the largest margin of victory in the Premier League, which the club originally had registered in 1995 with a 9-0 win over Ipswich Town.

Solskjaer's side will next take on Everton in the 2020-21 Premier League on Saturday. Manchester United are currently placed second in the league table with 44 points.
