A 33-year-old man in Kenya was arrested Saturday for allegedly killing his younger brother and dumping the body in a pit latrine.

The accused, identified as Victor Cheruiyot, reportedly mutilated the victim before disposing of his remains. Cheruiyot was taken into custody in the Olmotonyi area of Bomet central-sub county, Citizen TV reported.

Acting Bomet central sub-county Police Commander Francis Nganga said the accused ambushed his brother inside a compound, and hit him severally on the head with a hammer. The police added Cheruiyot then used a panga – a type of machete found in East and Southern Africa – to mutilate the body.

Authorities said the people living nearby heard a commotion and raised an alarm. Several members of the public rushed to the scene and thrashed the suspect before he was reportedly forced to reveal where he hid the body.

The police arrived at the scene and rescued the suspect from being burnt by the angry mob. Photos of the public thrashing the suspect was shared by Opera News.

A search team retrieved the mutilated body from the pit, where they also found the hammer and the panga used in the murder. The remains of the victim were sent to the Long’isa county hospital mortuary for an autopsy. The suspect is also receiving treatment in the same facility.

Cheruiyot is expected to be arraigned once the investigation is completed. The motive behind the killing remains unclear.

The incident comes days after the body of a 17-year-old boy was found dumped along a highway in Wajir County. The victim was identified as Abey Bishar. According to All Africa, the body was found with visible knife injuries in the neck. "There were few blood spots at the scene where the body was found. However, there were tire marks indicating a car dropped the body there," a senior officer, Kennedy Ismani, told local media. The brother of the deceased told the police the victim had left early in the morning on Friday to go for work. But as it got late, the family began worrying as he did not return home. Later, they got to know that the victim was dead. An investigation is underway into the incident.
