  • Meghan Markle and Princess Diana both used their fashion choices in making statements
  • The late Princess of Wales embraced the trends and expressed her emotions through her style choices
  • Markle knows the language of clothing like her late mother-in-law

Meghan Markle and Princess Diana share some similarities when it comes to making fashion statements.

Markle has a brief stint in the royal family compared to the late Princess of Wales. But both have the same approach when it comes to making a statement through their fashion styles.

"Diana was facing critics from inside the family and certainly from the public. And Meghan, her time was obviously much briefer as a female, working royal, but the amount of criticism and the racist coverage she received [was intense]," fashion journalist Elizabeth Holmes told People.

"As you're getting married and getting to know a new family, and with Meghan and Diana having children, that was a lot to absorb. When they find their footing and when they know how to dress in a way that checks off all the royal boxes of expectations — but also displays their individuality and who they are — that's when I really smile. It's like they've hit their stride."

The "HRH: So Many Thoughts on Royal Style" author praised the way Princess Diana embraced trends and expressed her emotions through her style choices. For her, Prince William and Prince Harry's mom added her emotions when she dressed up, so whatever she was going through reflected on how she looked.

"She had these very distinct phases in her dressing and they track with the tumultuous personal life she was experiencing," she added.

Holmes made the same observation with Markle because the Duchess of Sussex "[knows] the language of clothing." She found Markle's style more fashion-forward and modern compared to Kate Middleton’s. Also, the former "Suits" star is more known for wearing statement coats, sleek dresses and even suits.

"Within the royal fold, and within what we have come to expect from royal fashion, because of Kate and the ways in which she emulated the Queen," Holmes continued.

"Meghan looked new and exciting, and modern, and sophisticated. She brought her Southern California relaxed vibe to a famously stuffy institution.”

In related news, Prince Harry and Markle allegedly widened the gap between them and the royal family with their Remembrance Sunday tribute. Royal expert Katie Nicholl felt that their decision to celebrate the event in their own way would upset the Firm, and their photos only highlighted the great divide between them.
