As the Memorial Day 2017 is just two days away, many New Yorkers can use this weekend to escape the grind of everyday life by taking a short trip. With summer around the corner, it’s time to kick the vacation season with these last minute trip ideas.

Many popular New York weekend getaway spots are just a short, few hours’ drive from downtown Manhattan. For this weekend, you can consider these eight getaway destinations.

1. Ocean City, New Jersey (2.5-hour drive from Manhattan): Here could enjoy time with your friends and family soaking in the sun at the beaches. Activities such as boating, biking and boardwalks – along a stretch of sand dunes could be interesting. You could pick some souvenirs while you stroll the boardwalk and also later enjoy a Ferris wheel ride at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier.

2. Newport, Rhode Island (3 hour drive from Manhattan): While this coastal town is famous for its beaches, do not forget to explore the town's iconic mansions such as the The Breakers, the Vanderbilt's magnificent summer "cottage," the Versailles-inspired Rose Cliff and Chepstow, designed to resemble a grand Italian villa.

3. North Fork, Long Island (1 and 3/4-hour drive or 2 hours and 45 minutes by train from Manhattan): Farms, wineries and breweries are the USP of this place, so visit this place for a wine and taste tour.

4. Catskills, New York (2 hour drive from Manhattan): Breathtaking views, cool rivers and wildlife are the main highlights of this mountain getaway. Affordable and definitely ideal for you Memorial Day weekend.

5. Watch Hill, Rhode Island (2.5 hours from Manhattan): Sunsets are the best here and after that you could also go climbing to get a view of the Watch Hill harbor and the Atlantic Ocean.

6. Fire Island, New York (2 hour drive from Manhattan.): Cars aren’t allowed on many parts of this stretch of sand facing the Atlantic Ocean, but this could be a good option to enjoy the beautiful beaches and also the nightlife, and charm.

7. Poconos, Pennsylvania (2-hour drive from Manhattan): Famous for its outdoor fun, this Pennsylvania’s beauty is for bringing out the adventurous side of you. Float down a river or relax by a lake if you are not an avtivities person.

8. Branford, Connecticut (1.30 hours drive from Manhattan): This shoreline community is for the laid-back tourist. The town has a surprisingly robust shopping scene, a pedestrian-friendly area lined with boutiques, local stores and family-owned restaurants. To get here, you can take the
Metro-North from Grand Central to Branford. The ride will take about 3 hours and 10 minutes.
