Michael Vartan revealed what he felt after he locked lips with Drew Barrymore in “Never Been Kissed” when he joined his former co-star on “The Drew Barrymore Show” for a special cast reunion.

Vartan and Barrymore co-starred in the romantic flick in 1999, in which they played lovers Sam and Josie. During Vartan’s special guest appearance on Barrymore’s talk show on Tuesday, he told her about his “very embarrassing” story about their climactic on-screen kiss.

“I get up to the mound, we embrace and we start kissing and you really kissed me,” Vartan told Barrymore. “And I was not ready for it, in the least. And I’m a man. I was a very young man, back then. I had feelings and the feelings were just—they just happened. And I very quickly realized I was in a very bad spot because I was wearing very loose sort of like slacks and I thought, ‘This is gonna be a disaster when they cut. I must preemptively end this,’” he continued.

Vartan said he just yelled “cut” out of panic after the smooch and said, “Oh guys, sorry, my back. I put my back out playing ball.” He then went off into his corner, thinking horrible thoughts like, “Dead puppies, dead puppies.” After that, he said he was finally able to compose himself.

“Luckily, the subsequent scenes went on without a hitch but that was, uh, you’re a very good kisser,” he told Barrymore, who chuckled off her feet after his confession.

For her part, the actress said she had intended to make the kiss passionate since she knew Vartan was single at the time. “You weren’t married at the time, so yeah I went for it,” she told Vartan. “Because you were single and I felt like I wasn’t going to offend anybody,” the actress said.

Barrymore was 24 while Vartan was 30 when they co-starred in the film. Twenty years since then, Vartan still keeps the gift that Barrymore gave him after they wrapped shooting.

“I don’t know if you’ll remember, but you gave me this very sweet little wrap gift. It was this beautiful little fern. Well, I thought it was a fern. So I kept it, of course, and over the years this thing was growing,” he said.
