A Michigan man who shot his mother-in-law to death inside a hotel room on Thursday (May 14) was arrested in Indiana.

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the Staybridge Suites on James Street in Holland Township, Michigan, around 1:45 a.m. on Thursday for a welfare check on a 52-year-old woman after one of her family members called in and expressed concern over her safety. The person informed the police that the woman was last seen at the hotel.

The officers found the woman dead inside the hotel room. The woman was later identified as Michelle Speck who hailed from Holland. According to an initial investigation, Speck was stabbed to death.

The police narrowed down their suspicion onto a family member of the victim. The suspect was the woman’s son-in-law, identified as 31-year-old David McCoy.

The motive behind the slaying was unclear.

The authorities began a lookout for McCoy. Officers learned that he had fled the hotel hours earlier with the victim's car. They suspected that he fled the state.

On Thursday afternoon, the Indiana police were able to locate him driving the victim’s car in the South Bend area of Indiana, which was about 90 miles away from the crime scene.

McCoy was taken into custody without an incident. He was being held at an Indiana jail. Ottawa County sheriff’s detectives were heading to Indiana to extradite him to Michigan.

The investigators will also consult the prosecutors to determine the charges that can be filed against him. The investigation was ongoing and no further details were available at the moment.
