The Milwaukee Brewers clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2011 following their Wednesday night win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Brewers won a tight 2-1 game at the Busch Stadium to improve their record to 92-67 and complete a series sweep over the Cardinals to assure themselves of a spot in the NL wild card game at the minimum. Jhoulys Chacin and four relievers notably restricted the home side to two hits during the game.

It is just the fifth time in franchise history that Milwaukee will feature in the postseason.

Even if they lose their next three games against the Detroit Lions, they will clinch a playoff berth, provided St. Louis lose any of their three games against the Chicago Cubs, or if the Colorada Rockies lose two of their final four games.

However, the Brewers will be looking to win NL Central as they are currently behind the Cubs, who at the time of writing, are tied with the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-6. Should Chicago win, they will take their record to 92-66.

The Cubs also benefited from the Brewers winning as they too, clinched a playoff spot and will make their fourth straight playoff appearance for the first time in franchise history.

It's uncertain where the two teams will finish at the end of the regular season. For example, if the Brewers win their final four games, the Cubs would have to win four of their final five to tie for the division lead.

Should the Brewers finish in the wild card spot, they could face the Los Angeles Dodgers (88-70) who currently hold the second spot, however, the Rockies (87-70) could also clinch the spot.

The Brewers host the Tigers on Friday next.
