MMA News: Women’s Boxing Icon Claressa Shields Returns To Cage At PFL World Championship 2021

Apart from the six world championship bouts on deck at the PFL World Championship 2021 this Wednesday, October 27th at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood, Florida, one of the biggest names in combat sports returns to the cage as Claressa Shields takes on Abigail Montes in a special featured women’s lightweight contest.

A three-division world champion, two-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time amateur world champion in boxing, Shields is without a doubt one of the best boxers in the world today.

In late-2020, it was announced that Shields would cross over into mixed martial arts after signing an exclusive deal with PFL.

This past June, Shields finally made her highly-anticipated debut and definitely lived up to the hype.

After facing some trouble in the opening moments, "T-Rex" rallied back en route to a third-round TKO stoppage to officially kick start her MMA career and move her one more step closer to realizing her goal of becoming the first person to simultaneously hold world titles in boxing and MMA.

Now, Shields once again steps inside the cage as she takes on a new challenge.

Standing in front of Shields is the undefeated Montes, who is 2-0 in her MMA career.

A veteran of Combate and iKon Fighting Federation, Montes is coming off a second-round stoppage win over Teresita De Jesus Lopez back in April.

The 21-year old enters the biggest stage she has ever been on as she meets without a doubt the biggest name she has ever faced in her career.

A win for Shields will only help in cementing her legitimacy as an MMA fighter, while a victory for Montes likey puts her on the world’s radar.

Whatever the result will be on Wednesday, it’s likely that a new contender for the 2022 PFL season’s female lightweight roster will emerge.
