The body of a 6-month-old baby was found in a drainage canal in India. Authorities suspect the child's mother threw him into the drain after a dispute with her husband.

The incident took place in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. Early Thursday, people who live nearby found the body of the baby and retrieved it. The baby was rushed to a local government hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The police, who responded to the scene, checked surveillance footage and questioned eyewitnesses. Authorities said the child's parents were arguing Wednesday night, following which the mother took her youngest son and dumped him in the Guntatippa drainage, The Times of India reported.

“They got married in 2019 and have two sons — Daniel (18 months) and Samuel, who was six months old. Jayaraj is addicted to alcohol and ganja (cannabis) and was also suspecting his wife's fidelity due to which they used to have regular fights," a police officer told The Times of India. Both, husband and wife, work at a plastic company.

After preliminary investigation, the police arrested the 6-month-old's mother, media outlet The Hans India reported. The woman has only been identified by her first name Meenakshi. Authorities have registered a case against her. The police have not revealed the charges against the woman.

In a similar case of filicide, the police in the state of Assam said a woman allegedly killed her child by throwing her into a pond Monday. The body of the 5-year-old was found floating in the pond by her aunt. Terrified by the sight, the aunt immediately informed the police. The mother of the child and another suspect were arrested.

Last month, a man was arrested for killing his wife and throwing his three minor children into a canal. The police said the man murdered his wife after she refused to have sex with him. The incident took place in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The accused fatally shot his 28-year-old wife Dolly and threw his three kids – two daughters and one son – into the Ganga canal. The children were aged 5 years, 3 years and 18 months. During questioning, the accused admitted to killing his wife and children.
