National Apple Day is marked every year on Oct. 21 to appreciate the fruit and its health benefits. This day was created in 1990 by a U.K.-based charity organization.

"Apples have been linked to numerous health benefits, including improved gut health and reduced risk of stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and some cancers," Jessica Levinson, a culinary nutrition expert in Westchester, New York, according to Everyday Health.

A medium-sized apple is a good source of fiber, U.S. Department of Agriculture says.

Here are some of the other health benefits of apple, courtesy Healthline:

1. Apples are high in fiber and water — two qualities that make them filling and good for weight loss.

2. Apples contain soluble fiber, which can help lower your blood cholesterol levels.

3. Apples help lower the risk of type 2 diabetes.

4. Apples contain pectin, a type of fiber that acts as a prebiotic, which feeds the good bacteria in your gut.

5. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds in Apple may help promote bone density and strength.

6. Antioxidant-rich apples may help protect your lungs from oxidative damage.

7. The fiber in apples may provide cancer-preventing perks.
