Read a Book Day is celebrated on Sept. 6 every year, observed to encourage people to read books of their choice. While this is not a public holiday, many people mark this day by picking their favorite book and spending the day reading.

Here are some of the inspiring quotes about reading:

1. "Maybe this is why we read, and why in moments of darkness we return to books: to find words for what we already know." — Alberto Manguel

2. "I hope everyone that is reading this is having a really good day. And if you are not, just know that in every new minute that passes you have an opportunity to change that." — Gillian Anderson

3. "Children should learn that reading is a pleasure, not just something that teachers make you do in school." — Beverly Cleary

4. "A book lying idle on a shelf is wasted ammunition. Like money, books must be kept in constant circulation... A book is not only a friend, it makes friends for you. When you have possessed a book with mind and spirit, you are enriched. But when you pass it on you are enriched threefold." — Henry Miller

5. "If you have read 6,000 books in your lifetime, or even 600, it's probably because at some level you find 'reality' a bit of a disappointment." — Joe Queenan

6. Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. — Joseph Addison

7. “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one.” ― George R.R. Martin

8. “If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.” ― Oscar Wilde

9. “Only the very weak-minded refuse to be influenced by literature and poetry.” ― Cassandra Clare

10. “Let us read, and let us dance; these two amusements will never do any harm to the world.” ― Voltaire
