KEY POINTS

  • JR Smith is one of the more popular players in the league
  • He is known for his silly antics and smooth touch from beyond the arc
  • He recently showed these skills in a workout with the Los Angeles Lakers

JR Smith has been one of the most popular players in the current era with his entertaining personality and sharpshooting ability. Whether he’s making news across the Internet with memes or showing up in highlight reels, Smith has found ways to stay relevant in the league.

The six-foot-six shooting guard currently does not have a team since being waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2019.

Smith was currently part of a Los Angeles Lakers workout. He was with fellow free agent Dion Waiters. Waiters possess similar traits as Smith as both are athletic guards who can shoot it from deep. Waiters is suspended on separate occasions as a member of the Miami Heat when he failed to comply with the team’s policies. The Lakers organization will have to make a decision on whom to pick in their final open roster spot – as they’ve also kept their options open beyond the two.

While there’s no reassurance for anything, Smith was able to display positive attributes. Per Lakers beat writer for the Los Angeles Times Tania Ganguli, Smith’s familiarity with Lebron James and his shooting ability are seen as pluses.

Smith was Lebron’s teammate with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Smith will infamously be known for his blunder during game one of the 2018 NBA Finals. Smith dribbled out the clock and passed the ball instead of shooting during the last few seconds of a tied fourth quarter. The Cavaliers eventually lost the game in overtime and were swept in four games by the Golden State Warriors.

Other than that, Smith has been a productive member of the Cavaliers with Lebron. He was an integral part of the 2016 championship run where they came from behind and squashed the Warriors’ 3-1 Finals lead.

He was all over the court and caught fire beyond the three-point arc, as the Warriors were unable to contain him in the series. His shooting was in full display and has had experience in winning with Lebron – key points to consider for the Lakers organization.
