KEY POINTS

  • Luka Doncic was named as the best player to build around in the next decade
  • The Slovenian lacks accuracy from downtown and the free-throw line
  • Jason Kidd hopes to bring the best out of Doncic this coming season

Luka Doncic was named as the best young player to build around for the next ten years on a list created by Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey.

“His game isn't as similar to LeBron's (James) as some seem to think, but there really aren't many other [comparisons] for Luka,” Bailey wrote.

“The former is one of the three to five best players in NBA history and the only one who piled up more wins over replacement player than Luka through an age-21 season.”

The hype for Doncic has been alive since he was a 16-year-old demolishing veteran basketball players in Europe.

Many believe Doncic to be the best player in the 2018 NBA draft, and his play has spoken for itself through the years.

Though many say Doncic is overhyped because he puts up numbers without wins, Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns was labeled the same way before leading them to their first Finals appearance in almost 3 decades.

To his credit, Doncic is already an elite talent at scoring the basketball, but it is his defense that worries most people most.

The Dallas Mavericks guard has yet to adjust to the way fouls are called as a defensive player in the NBA, with him spending more time complaining with the referees instead of getting back on defense.

In his NBA career, Doncic is averaging 25.7 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 7.7 assists, along with one steal per game.

However, his offensive game still has two massive holes in it: three-point shooting and free throws.

The Slovenian has a tendency to settle for stepback three's when plays break down, resulting in his 33.1 percent shooting from beyond-the-arc on 2.7 makes over 8.1 attempts.

For as many fouls as Doncic draws per game, he also has a problem converting free throws.

Averaging 7.6 attempts per game throughout his NBA career, he has only made 5.6 of them, amounting to a respectable but disappointing 73.5 percent.

Drawing fouls has become an easy game for the Mavericks guar, but he still needs to convert those shots and become reliable enough to shoot from the foul line in crunch time.

Doncic’s balanced all-around game coupled with his age only makes him the next best superstar after guys like Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James and Steph Curry have called it a career.

The Mavericks opted to re-sign Tim Hardaway Jr. and bring in both Sterling Brown and Reggie Bullock via free agency, hoping to give Doncic more shooters on the wings.

This upcoming NBA season is one to watch for the Mavericks since it will be Jason Kidd’s first year coaching Doncic, and fans are eager to see whether Kidd can bring out the most in the Slovenian superstar.
