KEY POINTS

  • The Kings acquired Domantas Sabonis in a blockbuster trade package with the Pacers
  • De'Aaron Fox and Davion Mitchell will serve as the Kings' backcourt duo
  • Tyrese Haliburton's ability as a lead point guard will help unlock the Pacers' offense

Teams across the league are feeling the effects of the upcoming NBA trade deadline, and the Indiana Pacers may turn out to be one of the biggest winners after acquiring emergent point guard Tyrese Haliburton from the Sacramento Kings.

The blockbuster trade is as follows according to NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski:

  • Indiana Pacers receive: G Tyrese Haliburton, G Buddy Hield, F/C Tristan Thompson
  • Sacramento Kings receive: F/C Domantas Sabonis, G/F Justin Holiday, G/F Jeremy Lamb, 2027 second-round pick

A few weeks ago, Haliburton reiterated his commitment to the Sacramento fanbase in building a future NBA title contender no matter how long it takes, but it now appears that they are still keen on having De'Aaron Fox as their main star.

Without Haliburton, the Kings are banking on the development of rookie Davion Mitchell and hope that he can coexist with Fox as the lead playmakers for Sacramento.

The Pacers are getting a massively underrated player who was forced to take a backseat with Fox in Sacramento and will now be tasked with leading a team into the future.

Presuming that the Pacers do not make any other moves, their projected starting lineup is set to have Haliburton at the lead guard spot, Malcolm Brogdon at the two (if he recovers from his Achilles soreness), Hield as the small forward, Torrey Craig, with Myles Turner shoring up the center spot.

Haliburton has been showing off his playmaking skills since the Kings started pairing him up with Fox in the backcourt and was a key figure in their offense this season.

The 21-year-old from the Iowa State Cyclones is currently averaging 14.3 points on 45.7 percent field goal shooting, 3.1 rebounds, 7.4 assists (ranking 11th in total assists this season), and 1.7 steals in 34.5 minutes of action.

Haliburton will have his hands full under head coach Rick Carlisle, who has a proven track record in utilizing pass-first point guards to initiate his offense--best exemplified in how he was able to maximize the skills of Jason Terry and Jason Kidd during his time with the Dallas Mavericks.

Haliburton has an opportunity to become one of the league’s top-tier point guards with the move to Indiana as his ability to develop plays will make him a fearsome threat off the pick-and-roll with Turner as his big man.

The Pacers know exactly what they traded Sabonis for and getting Haliburton, along with Hield, injects their offense with some much-needed consistency as they begin their road to a soft rebuild.

Thanks to this major acquisition, the Pacers become a team that fans should keep their eye on as their next moves will be focused on building a playoff-worthy team around both Haliburton and Turner.
