KEY POINTS

  • The Houston Rockets were interested in Tyler Herro or Duncan Robinson in exchange for P.J. Tucker
  • The talks fell through as the Heat have no plans of dealing away Herro or Robinson
  • Tucker remains a target by several teams beefing up for the NBA postseason

The Houston Rockets appear headed for a rebuild but made it clear that they want young players.

One of the players who other teams may want to get is P.J. Tucker, someone who could provide teams with muscle and toughness.

Several teams could use Tucker, particularly the ones who are bent on making a good run in the 2020-21 NBA season. Factoring in the preference of the Rockets to take in young blood, the Miami Heat come to mind.

Looking at the roster of Miami, they have a plethora of young players who could blossom with other teams if Heat president Pat Riley would include them in a deal.

Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson, two proven shooters, would be ideal players for other teams in need of outside shooting and added scoring.

It appears that is what the Rockets have in mind. Tucker is said to be one of the targets of the Heat, but talks bogged down during negotiations according to Jake Fischer of the Bleacher Report.

No details were given, but it seems the names of Herro and Robinson were part of the discussions.

It was not mentioned if further talks would be held although several other teams are equally interested in Tucker. Among the clubs said to be considering the power forward include the Milwaukee Bucks, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers and Denver Nuggets.

From that list, not all have the required young players that the Rockets want in exchange.

A reason behind the preference of Houston to get a young player for Tucker is because they are already loaded with picks taken from past deals.

The current season no longer looks promising for the Rockets, toting an 11-23 win-loss record. Head coach Stephen Silas appears to be planning to use the remainder of the season as a gauge to assess which direction the team should head moving forward.

For the teams like the Lakers and Nets who would love to get Tucker, it would take a complicated route to land the veteran forward.

A buyout could be an option, but this may only take shape after the NBA trade deadline on March 25.
