KEY POINTS

  • The newborn broke the record held by a Brazilian baby weighing 13 lbs at birth
  • The mother was expecting an 8-lb baby and was surprised by what she saw
  • The hospital is accepting donations of clothing and diapers fit for a nine-month-old

A newborn entered the world weighing what an almost one-year-old child ideally weighs. The infant boy is even built like a nine-month-old, with his 16 lb (7.3 kg) body measuring about 2 feet, or 59 cm, in height.

The baby's mother received more than she bargained for during the routine check-up at the clinic a day before her delivery. Doctors observed that her child was large for gestational age and suggested a Cesarean procedure.

The 27-year-old new mother, identified as Cleidiane Santos dos Santos, gave birth to the boy, now named Angerson on Jan. 18 at Hospital Padre Colombo in Parintins, Amazonas State in Brazil, GulfToday reported.

Doctors declared the mother-son duo is healthy. Angerson holds the record for being the heaviest baby ever born in Amazonas and was kept in an incubator where he remained in "stable" condition.

According to an update Sunday, Angerson who is being referred to as the Gypsy baby by the medical facility where he was born, was in the care of the neonatal team.

"He is receiving intensive assistance from the neonatology team, which is responsible for the care. We are only happy, satisfied and grateful for everything working out in this case, in this risk situation, a rare situation that also ended up surprising us, because we were imagining a baby weighing around six kilos, on the ultrasound, but he even surpassed that expectation," obstetrician Artemisia Pessoa said, according to Reporter Parintins.

Angerson's equally amazed mother said, "I didn't expect this surprise, I thought it would be four kilos, but it turned out to be seven kilos. I want to thank the team at Hospital Padre Colombo, who have been giving me strength and treating me very well, since I arrived here, if it weren't for them, I don't know what would have become of me. So I thank each one."

The hospital is now helping Angerson's parents acquire size-appropriate clothing for him. The newborn broke the record held by a baby born in the state back in 2011 who weighed 13 lbs and measured 1.8 ft. Angerson however, is not the only large baby born in Brazil. Ademilton dos Santos was born in Salvador in north-eastern Brazil in 2005 weighing 17 lbs (8 kilos) at birth. The size that earned him the title of the largest boy ever born in Brazil was attributed to Ademilton's mother Francisco Ramos dos Santos who had diabetes.
