The San Francisco 49ers fell short of making it to the Super Bowl LVI, something that places Jimmy Garoppolo in the dark.

The 30-year-old quarterback is expected to be donning a new uniform next season with the Niners projected to make a switch from Garoppolo to Trey Lance.

Back in July, NFL insider Matt Maiocco pointed out that the only way Garoppolo would remain in San Francisco was if he could lead the team to the Super Bowl.

“If the 49ers go to the Super Bowl, win the Super Bowl, it’s gonna be real tough for them to make that decision and move on from Garoppolo in the offseason,” Maiocco told Sports For All PH podcast at the time.

Furthermore, Maiocco emphasized that the plan was always to transition to Lance.

“It’s going to be Trey Lance. It’s just a matter on when they make that decision when to go with Trey Lance over Jimmy Garoppolo,” the sports scribe quipped.

Against the Los Angeles Rams, Garoppolo had a chance to lead the Niners to another miraculous comeback.

However, he ended up throwing a bad pass out of desperation to JaMycal Hasty.

Hasty was unable to control it and the ball fell into the waiting hands of linebacker Travin Howard. That practically doused any hope the 49ers had.

After that game, Garoppolo revealed that he played hurt in the NFC Championship game. He was bothered by thumb and shoulder injuries, something that sorely affected his game, Bally Sports reported.

“Every play, I feel it. But we made it through... I can’t believe this (expletive) held up, to be completely honest with you. The thumb, the shoulder… all of it. It was one thing after another… Every time I threw. It was a lot,” the 30-year-old stated.

Heading into the offseason, it will be interesting what lies ahead for Garoppolo. He has a year left in his deal, but the majority believe that he is on his way out of San Francisco.
