You can cross off one potential destination for Deshaun Watson. The Carolina Panthers have reportedly agreed to a trade a 2021 sixth-round draft pick, as well as a 2022 second and fourth-rounder to the New York Jets in exchange for Sam Darnold.

Carolina has been among Watson’s top suitors since the quarterback asked the Houston Texans for a trade. Now that the Panthers have acquired Darnold, they are thought to be no longer interested in trading for Watson.

It’s unclear if Darnold will be Carolina’s starter for the 2021 NFL season, though the former Jet appears to be the favorite to land the job. Teddy Bridgewater was the Panthers’ starter in 2020 after inking a three-year, $63 million contract.

The Texans have not entertained trade talks for Watson, according to reports, as teams continue to call Houston about the superstar. Watson’s NFL future remains murky amid 22 lawsuits filed against him for sexual misconduct or assault.

Darnold never lived up to expectations with the Jets. New York made the quarterback the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 draft. Darnold started 38 total games, posting a 13-25 record with 45 touchdown passes, 39 interceptions and a 78.6 passer rating.

Darnold battled injuries and had some struggles while healhty. The 23-year-old had a career-low 72.7 passer rating last season.

The Jets didn’t provide Darnold with much help. The Panthers could be hoping that a change of scenery, better coaching and an improved supporting cast can help turn Darnold into a reliable starter.

Bridgewater went 4-11 with 3,733 passing yards, 15 passing touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a 92.1 passer rating in his first year with the Panthers.
