KEY POINTS

  • Cam Newton is one of the biggest free agents in the NFL today
  • Reports have indicated that Cam Newton wants to remain as a starter but is open to playing as a backup in the right team
  • The Los Angeles Rams can benefit from the services of Cam Newton

The Cam Newton free-agency story has had numerous developments as each day passes. While multiple teams have been linked to Newton, the Los Angeles Rams have also emerged as a possible fit.

To add to the list of those connected to Newton, the Jacksonville Jaguars are one of the leading candidates to land the former MVP. This shows that the signing of Newton to any team is a welcome addition. But with the recent reports of the Pro-Bowler showing openness to play for a backup role, several teams have also been included in the mix.

As reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Newton wants to be a starter but he’s open to playing as a backup in the right team.

These situations can be applied to the Steelers and the Chargers if they want to pursue someone of Newton’s caliber. The backup role is open for the 2015 First-team All-Pro as either support for Ben Roethlisberger or a mentor for the newly drafted Justin Herbert.

To add to these, ESPN’s Louis Riddick sees the potential that Newton will have if he signs with the Rams barring any salary cap issues.

“I know that the Rams can’t really fit Cam, hypothetically, under their salary cap. But can you think of a Cam Newton and Sean McVay pairing? What would be better for Cam than that considering how Sean likes to run his offense? I have no idea why Cam isn’t signed right now or why teams aren’t kicking the tires more,” Riddick said by way of The Spun.

It was a disappointing season last year for the Rams with a 9-7 finish, failing to qualify for the postseason. Despite having stellar moments from head coach McVay and Pro-Bowlers Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey, the Rams were unable to match their 13-3 record in 2018. Having the level of someone like Newton can change the dynamic of the team moving forward.

It’s been difficult lately given the global pandemic for Newton to display his current physical condition. Whether or not he gets signed to a team as a starter or a backup, one thing is for certain is that a healthy Newton is one of the best talents in the league.
