  • Cam Newton is one of the hottest free-agents available in the NFL
  • The recent betting odds featured the New England Patriots as the favorites to land Cam Newton
  • Several experts shared their thoughts on how unlikely it is that Cam Newton will sign with New England

With the offseason still brewing hot for teams, the speculated Cam Newton signing to the Patriots has been slammed unlikely.

The recent NFL draft saw the New England Patriots skipping the chance on selecting a quarterback. While it has been rumored that the Patriots will select a signal-caller, the draft proved otherwise. The highest selection New England had was for safety Kyle Dugger out of Lenior-Rhyne as pick number 37 in the second round.

These have added to the talk that Newton is a perfect fit for the Patriots with their direction for a new quarterback. With Tom Brady jumping ship to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the quarterback position has been left vacant for a star player to take over.

While the idea of the 2011 number one overall pick leading the charge of New England has teased fans across the league, this isn’t deemed likely. Despite being the Patriots being the betting favorites at -190, experts have slammed the notion that Newton will go to New England.

Last March, Patriots beat writer Jeff Howe tweeted that the Patriots have no interest in signing Cam Newton. He reiterated that point by quote tweeting his previous statement and sharing that nothing has changed since then.

There are several concerns regarding signing Newton and one prominent issue is if the Patriots can free enough cap space for it. As shared by former NFL Players Association President Domonique Foxworth, he shared that it makes sense to have Newton with Patriots but was wary if it was possible.

“It makes sense from an on-field perspective but the Patriots don’t have any money,” Foxworth said.

“They got less than a million in cap space and I’m not sure if they can pull off the maneuvers to open up enough space to sign Cam Newton,” he added.

More people have chipped in their thoughts on the rumor of Newton signing with New England, including former NFL quarterback Chris Sims.

“I think it’s stupid to say he’ll go to New England,” Simms said in NBC Sports.

“I think if they wanted to do Cam Newton, they would have drafted players that fit Cam Newton’s style of play and I just don’t see that happening. So I’m gonna say Jacksonville is my leader in the clubhouse here,” Simms added.

It has been a unique season for the New England Patriots and it will be interesting to see how it will turn out with big names such as Newton in the free-agency market.
