KEY POINTS

  • Cam Newton's reunion with Ron Rivera is nowhere close to happening
  • Washington is prioritizing Heinecke and Allen to fill in for Fitzpatrick
  • The gravity of Fitzpatrick's injury will be known anytime soon

The Washington football team suffered a blow recently, with Ryan Fitzpatrick expected to miss several weeks after suffering an injury on Sunday, September 12.

They do have Taylor Heinecke and Kyle Allen around, one of whom Ron Rivera could tap to be their starting quarterback.

However, it cannot be discounted that Rivera may dip his hands in the free-agent market to try looking for a quarterback.

There is perhaps no other name that makes sense other than Cam Newton.

The 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player is currently a free agent after he was shocking released by the New England Patriots.

Most know that Newton and Rivera worked together with the Carolina Panthers, so a reunion would make sense.

Unfortunately, it appears that is not part of the plan right now. According to a source cited by Pro Football Talk, the Washington Football Team is nowhere close to a possible agreement with the 32-year-old quarterback.

However, all that is subject to change. This depends on how Heinecke and Allen can fill up for the injured Fitzpatrick.

The same holds if the two can keep themselves away from the injury bug.

But one cannot help but think why Rivera would not reunite with Newton who helped the Panthers in 2015.

Questions on the relationship of the three-time Pro Bowler with Rivera are now up in the air. This is something that could factor in just in case Washington ends up needing another play-caller somewhere down the road.

Fitzpatrick reportedly suffered a hip subluxation and is set to undergo an MRI on Monday, September 13, NFL.com reported.

This could provide an accurate timeline on how long the 38-year-old veteran will be kept off the field.

Washington is hoping that the injury is not serious. The hope is nothing broken, but only the MRI can shed more light on that concern.

Fitzpatrick exited the team’s game against their loss against the Los Angeles Chargers in the second quarter following a crunching hit from defender Uchenna Nwosu.

Washington will prioritize players internally before considering the free-agent market.

"He gave us a spark when we needed it," Rivera said of Heinicke's performance on Sunday. "When Taylor stepped in and brought some energy, that was a huge plus... There is something about Taylor; that's a huge positive. It brings a little something."
