KEY POINTS

  • Deshaun Watson was officially ruled out by the Texans for Sunday's Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars
  • The Texans listed “not injury-related” as the reason for Watson's absence
  • Watson missing the opening NFL game of the Texans sends mixed feelers

The Houston Texans made a curious move ahead of the opening of the 2021-22 NFL season when they named Tyrod Taylor their starting quarterback for Week 1.

On Friday, it was confirmed that quarterback Deshaun Watson was officially ruled out by the Texans for Sunday's Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported. The Texans listed “not injury-related” as the reason for Watson's absence.

Texans coach David Culley was also quoted by ESPN's Sarah Barshop as saying, “Tyrod Taylor will start at quarterback for us, for sure.”

As most know, things have not exactly been well between Watson and the Texans, and the team's latest move appeared to imply that the row is far from settled. The three-time Pro Bowler has a standing trade request that remains up in the air.

The 25-year-old quarterback's legal troubles are also in focus. More than 20 civil lawsuits have been filed against Watson accusing him of inappropriate conduct and sexual assault. He has not been charged criminally, and his lawyer has denied the accusations.

Given those two issues, the move made by the Texans could be hinting at the possibility of a trade. Nothing official has been mentioned, but it is possible that Houston may be quietly discussing deals with other teams, despite its stance of wanting to keep the 2020 NFL passing yards leader.

Another possible scenario is the Texans doing due diligence considering Watson’s legal troubles. Although he has been allowed to participate in team activities, his future is a bit murky.

Also worth noting is that Watson is coming off a calf and ankle injury. As mentioned in a previous report, this could be a reason why the Texans are not rushing him back to action.

If the Texans do find a willing taker for him later, the health of Watson will be pivotal. However, the conditions to be considered go beyond that.

There is no telling what sanctions Watson may face due to his off-field situation. Depending on the outcome of his ongoing lawsuits, there is a chance he could be suspended.

Hence, it comes as no surprise that NFL teams amenable to dealing for Watson reportedly want some clauses on any deal. It was previously reported that some teams are allegedly asking for pick protections in what could be secured on their part in case the Watson issue goes from bad to worse.

The only thing certain now is that Watson is out for the Texans’ upcoming opening NFL game and that Taylor will take over. There is no telling if the 12th pick of the 2017 NFL Draft will play for the team this season.
