  • San Francisco 49ers might trade Marquise Goodwin on NFL Draft night
  • John Lynch admitted trading Goodwin "came close a couple of times"
  • Goodwin was a former Olympian who competed in track and field events

The San Francisco 49ers could finally pull off a deal involving Marquise Goodwin. The injury-bugged wide receiver may be due for a new start in another team as the 49ers are reportedly dead set to keep him on the trading block until the NFL Draft, where the team expects to receive a viable offer.

Matt Barrows of The Athletic quoted 49ers general manager John Lynch admitting the team “came close a couple of times” to trading Goodwin. But with multiple deal opportunities to be opened come April 23, Goodwin might have just been warned of his fate.

“He’s obviously someone the team could trade during the draft,” Barrows wrote.

Goodwin was barely in action during the 2019 season as he was nursing his knee and foot injuries. He managed to play just nine games as he absorbed his lowest numbers in receptions (12) and receiving touchdowns (1) since he joined the 49ers in 2017.

A properly executed roster move is imperative of Lynch and the 49ers as they are looking to bounce back from a painful loss in Super Bowl LIV against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

And with very limited space in their cap for potential signings, Goodwin, who is the highest-paid wide receiver in the team, could be the first man out.

Notably, even head coach Kyle Shanahan has mentioned San Francisco is exploring trade options for the six-year veteran.

“We could (trade him), yeah. You also don’t get rid of valuable people just for nothing. There are lots of things that are open,” Shanahan said in February, per Clutch Points.

Goodwin was a former Olympian who has competed and won medals in several international track and field events. Selected 78th in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft, the former Texas Longhorn played for the Buffalo Bills for three years before landing in San Francisco to join the 49ers. His transfer yielded quick dividends for the Bay Area-based squad, asserting his will to register a career-best 56 receptions in his first season with the team.

The 29-year-old boasts 140 receptions and 13 receiving touchdowns for his career, that on top of 2, 323 receiving yards, 468 return yards, and 89 rushing yards.
