Nintendo Stock Jump as ‘Pokémon Pokopia’ Becomes a Surprise Hit
Shares surged 7% on Friday after the Japanese gaming giant revealed that sales of Pokémon Pokopia have surpassed 5 million copies.

Nintendo shares surged on Friday after the Japanese gaming giant revealed that sales of Pokémon Pokopia have surpassed 5 million copies, giving investors fresh evidence that a strong software lineup could help revive momentum for the Nintendo Switch 2.
The milestone came just over four months after Pokémon Pokopia launched on March 5. Sales have made it the second-best-selling game on the Switch 2, putting it ahead of Donkey Kong Bananza and behind Mario Kart World.
The rapid rise of Pokémon Pokopia is particularly notable as the game was not initially expected to become a blockbuster. First announced in September last year, it is a spin-off from Nintendo's hugely popular Pokémon franchise rather than an installment in the main series. Its gameplay includes elements similar to Animal Crossing, another of Nintendo's most successful franchises on the original Switch.
The game's better-than-expected sales could have implications beyond the title itself. Investors closely monitor Nintendo's game sales because successful titles can help drive demand and shipments for its consoles. That relationship is particularly important for Nintendo as the Switch 2 faces several headwinds just over a year after its debut.
Rising memory prices forced Nintendo to increase the price of the Switch 2, potentially creating another obstacle for consumers considering buying the console. Hardware sales have also slowed. Nintendo sold 3.82 million Switch 2 consoles during the June quarter, representing a 34.4% decline from the same period a year earlier.
The company expects to sell 16.5 million Switch 2 consoles during its fiscal year ending March 31, 2027. That forecast would also represent a decline from the previous fiscal year, increasing the importance of Nintendo's upcoming games as it attempts to keep consumers interested in its newest hardware.
Nintendo is already working to extend the momentum surrounding Pokémon Pokopia. On Thursday, the company also announced expansion packs and updates for the game as it seeks to attract new players while keeping existing gamers engaged.
The strong sales figures have arrived as investors become more optimistic about Nintendo's prospects. Although Nintendo shares remain down more than 16% since the beginning of the year, the stock has rallied more than 26% over the past month. Investors are betting that the company's outlook could improve and that upcoming blockbuster releases could help spur additional Switch 2 sales.
One of the biggest titles in Nintendo's pipeline is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, a remake of the classic game originally released for the Nintendo 64 in the late 1990s. Zelda remains one of Nintendo's most recognizable and popular franchises, making the upcoming release a potentially important title for the Switch 2.
Nintendo is also preparing two new Pokémon games for next year, adding another major franchise to the company's upcoming software slate. Pokémon and Zelda are among Nintendo's most valuable gaming properties, and their presence in the Switch 2 pipeline could be crucial as the company attempts to overcome slowing hardware sales and the impact of higher console prices.
