Five years since it’s disastrous launch, “No Man’s Sky” is set to receive its 17th major expansion update called “Frontiers” soon.

Developer Hello Games released a video to celebrate the 5th anniversary of “No Man’s Sky,” showcasing the journey that they went through since the game’s release up until it’s last update. At the end of the video, the developers teased a splash screen containing the name of the new expansion that’s scheduled to release sometime in the near future.

Not much yet is known about the “Frontiers” update, but fans expect it to be just as large and significant as the rest of the game’s expansions. The previous update, “Prisms,” introduced a wide range of graphical improvements that helped the game take full advantage of the latest generation of gaming consoles. This included support for Nvidia DLSS, volumetric lighting, parallax occlusion and more.

Previous updates for “No Man’s Sky” introduced content expansions that changed how the game was played significantly, from the addition of new exomechs and land rovers to base-building, monster taming and the recently-added “Expeditions” system that brough the game’s community closer together.

Hello Games initially drew the ire of the majority of the gaming community for overpromising and under-delivering. Before it was launched, “No Man’s Sky” was teased as a highly ambitious game that featured an ever-expanding universe designed to fulfill a sci-fi exploration fantasy. After launch, however, players were disappointed as they were left in an enormous-yet-empty universe. This marked “No Man’s Sky” as one of the biggest disappointments in gaming history.

Throughout the years, Hello Games continued to support “No Man’s Sky” with constant fixes and updates that slowly shaped the once-empty husk into a game that reflected the original vision that the developers had. Eventually, “No Man’s Sky” once again earned the love and attention of gamers everywhere, pulling off one of the most impressive comebacks that any game developer in the industry has ever done.

Five years and 16 major updates later, “No Man’s Sky” is still going strong and is showing no signs of stopping. Additional details regarding “Frontiers” will be made available soon as Hello Games reveals more about the upcoming update.
