A 2-year-old boy is dead following what investigators suspect to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident took place on Wednesday morning at a home in Fayetteville, North Carolina while two adults and a teenager were present.

ABC News reported that although the child was rushed to the hospital following his gunshot wound, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and died on Saturday.

Lt. Gary Womble of the Fayetteville Police Department revealed that officials have yet to determine how the child was able to obtain the weapon while others were in the home

“In my opinion, any gunshot wound is serious, especially when it happens to a juvenile,” he said during a press conference.

“It’s even more serious and more serious for us in our investigative methods to find out exactly what occurred that a child would suffer a gunshot wound. That’s important to us and that’s what [sic] the detectives are working hard to determine what happened.”

At the time of the incident, a neighbor revealed they saw a woman crying for help before help arrived for the toddler.

CBS 17 previously reported that the father of the 2-year-old was killed in his home in May 2019, his death is still being investigated.

The shooting of the boy remains under investigation, and officials have yet to release the child’s name to the public.

“The detectives are working that angle to find out because we want to know certainly what happened to the child so that’s what they’re learning right now,” Womble previously stated.
