According to reports, a shooting incident in North Carolina occurred around 2:30 p.m Tuesday (June 9) near 13th Avenue and Greenwood Avenue in the Halifax County town of Scotland Neck.

The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Scotland Neck Police, were investigating the scene where five people, including a 6-year-old child critically injured by unknown gunmen in a drive by shooting, had been shot.

"This is another cowardly act by individuals who just can't seem to settle disputes without the use of a firearm,” Scotland Neck Police Chief John Tippett told WTVD News.

Four of the five victims, airlifted by the EastCare medical helicopter to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, suffered life-threatening injuries. They reported them to be in a critical condition as of Tuesday evening and had to undergo surgery according to reports.

According to local sources, an adult and a child were inside a vehicle when another car approached them and opened fire. Two other people, who were sitting on the steps of one home in the 300 block of East 13th Street, were also shot.

“Our officers increased patrol in this area because it is a known drug area and there have been several complaints in the past week. It’s one thing for adults to have conflicts, but I will tolerate no one hurting or shooting innocent children,” Tippet said.

While on the scene, they alerted the investigators about another shooting incident involving the same vehicle.

They found the fifth victim whose state of injuries is unknown on Hwy. 903 just outside Scotland Neck. They rushed the victim to Martin County General Hospital in Williamston. The reports of his condition are still unknown.

The incident is being investigated as a drive-by shooting. The police are on the lookout for a white Charger suspected to have an involvement in the shooting. According to Scotland Neck police, a car that has spoiler on the back was occupied with several black men.

The authorities have started an investigation and are talking to several people in the neighborhood to develop any leads about the suspects. Surveillance videos in the neighborhood are being reviewed.

Sources from the police said they have developed several leads into the incident.

“We are learning more each minute about the shooting and who you are, do yourselves a favor, cooperate and turn yourselves in before law enforcement officers come for you,” Tippet concluded.

Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, Enfield Police Department, Martin County Sheriff’s Office, and Williamston Police Department are assisting Scotland Neck Police in their investigation.

They are requesting anyone with information to call Halifax County Crimestoppers at (252) 583-4444.
