KEY POINTS

  • Ok Rae Yoon will be challenging Christian Lee for the lightweight title on September 24
  • The South Korean pulled off two impressive wins in two weeks over Marat Gafurov and Eddie Alvarez
  • Lee's striking edge over Ok Rae Yoon pushes the fight in favor of the current lightweight champion

Ok Rae Yoon of South Korea is aiming for his first title in ONE Championship as he challenges lightweight kingpin Christian Lee at ONE: Revolution on September 24.

The challenger made an impressive promotional debut this April by beating Marat Gafurov and former Bellator and then former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez.

He is a gifted striker that enjoys targeting the opponent’s legs in order to whittle down the opponent’s movements, as seen in his fight against Alvarez.

The South Korean is no slouch in the grappling game as his defense held up to Gafurov’s pressure, forcing the Russian to empty most of his gas tank in the first round trying to get an early finish.

As for the champion, Lee has been enjoying a four-fight win streak since winning the title from Japanese superstar Shinya Aoki in May 2019.

Lee fights with a frenetic yet measured pace, forcing opponents to feel his presence early on in the fight--en route to an early finish as seen in most of his fights.

He is highly capable of standing in the pocket and throwing down, but his advantage is on getting in some quick hits then moving away from the opponent’s strikes before going in for the finish with a counter hit, best seen in his stoppage of Timofey Nastyukhin.

However, this does not mean that he is not capable of mixing it up on the ground as evidenced by his four submission victories, featuring this unique submission of Mahmoud Mohamed in his second professional fight.

On paper, both fighters look to be evenly matched as they have a similar height and reach, plus identical records of 15 wins and three losses.

It is very much expected that the South Korean will mix up his punches and kicks as he tries to chop down the champion’s legs while trying to push the Singaporean-American to engage with him--hoping to drag him into the later rounds.

The champion is not the type to back down from a fight though, and Lee will certainly put the pressure on Ok in the early rounds.

Though both men have great stamina, Lee has only gone past the first round five times in his entire career, with only two fights going beyond the distance.

The challenger is very much experienced going into the deeper waters of the fight as he has seen 12 fights go to a decision and winning 10 of them.

Lee’s striking may be the difference-maker in this one as his constant pressure may force Ok to be on the defensive and throw him off of his gameplan early on, egging the South Korean to engage with him on the feet.

Prediction: Christian Lee via TKO due to strikes in Round 2.

ONE: Revolution will be streaming live on September 24 at 6:30 PM Singapore Time (SGT) on the official ONE Championship YouTube channel and on the ONE Super App in Asia.

Meanwhile, the American audience can watch the card over at B/R Live.
