Boxing Hall of Famers Oscar de la Hoya and Erik Morales are teaming up to make Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia happen in 2020 or 2021.

Golden Boy CEO De La Hoya strongly supports the idea of a Canelo vs. Munguia fight in the future.

In his recent talk with ESPN Deportes, De La Hoya hinted at the possibility of the Canelo-Munguia fight. According to De La Hoya, maybe in “two years” the said fight has already matured for them to make it happen, Boxing Scene reported.

"Why not? Obviously when you have two Mexicans fighting inside the same ring you will have fireworks, so why not? Maybe next year, maybe in two years. Jaime Munguia is young and he has a long way to go in this sport and I think a Canelo-Jaime Munguia fight would be excellent all over the world," De La Hoya told ESPN Deportes.

De La Hoya expressed his admiration towards Jaime Munguia’s work ethic and discipline. He also noted that Mexican boxing legend Erik Morales is also taking part in making the Canelo vs. Munguia fight possible.

“Jaime Munguia is a fighter with a lot of discipline, he trains hard, he is well prepared and now with Erik Morales he wants to show off and show that he is here for a long time," De La Hoya said.

About a week ago, Golden Boy matchmaker Robert Diaz confirmed that with the help of Morales, a fight with Canelo Alvarez could be highly feasible when Munguia successfully moves up to middleweight.

Fernando Beltran, president of Zanfer Promotions also stated that they are not rushing things up and they want Munguia to be well prepared when the time for Canelo finally comes.

“We want to fight the great Canelo Alvarez. Why not?. As long as we continue to get Jaime experience and learn. He’s only 22, so we’re not in a hurry. But we want the fight,” Beltran stated.

Munguia on his part, is determined to leave the 154-lb division and he vows to give the fans a fight to remember before finally moving up.

“My plan is to finish my time at 154 with a big, spectacular show,” Munguia pointed.

Meanwhile, De La Hoya addressed Canelo’s anticipated return after being stripped of his IBF middleweight belt. According to De La Hoya, they will be announcing the date and opponent soon and Canelo will fight at the end of this year. He also added that they are already negotiating the details of the said fight.
