  • Guardiola became the quickest manager to 100 wins in Premier League
  • He broke Jose Mourinho's record
  • Guardiola bagged the record during Man City's 2-0 win Sunday

Pep Guardiola became the quickest manager to 100 wins in the Premier League after his side, Manchester City, defeated Sheffield United 2-0 Sunday.

The Spaniard achieved the milestone in 134 matches and thereby broke the record previously held by “the Special One” Jose Mourinho, who needed 142 games to finally secure a century of wins in the league. Mourinho’s landmark victory as a manager came when he guided Chelsea to a 3-1 win over Manchester United in January 2014.

The next on the list is one of the most beloved managers at present – Jurgen Klopp, who recorded his 100th Premier League win earlier this year. Klopp reached the milestone in his 159th match against Merseyside rivals Everton earlier this month.

The goal-scorers in Guardiola’s special victory were one of his best players in the Man City squad, Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne. In fact, Aguero’s opening goal was also the 1,000th goal of Guardiola’s managerial career, including his spells at FC Barcelona in Spain and German club, Bayern Munich.

When asked about the achievement, Guardiola was humble enough to quickly divert the topic to his players and support staff’s efforts over the years.

“It's a big compliment for the club, players and staff to achieve 100 victories. It's an incredible achievement for this incredible organization and big compliments to all the players and staff we had during this period. Of course, we are proud of everything in these seasons, the incredible effort. When you think about 100 wins in 134 games it is an incredible achievement. It is nice to be alongside these big teams,” the Spaniard said in a post-match interview.

Fully crediting his players for the 100 wins, Guardiola added, "It means a lot. Sometimes we lose perspective. But when you have this perspective with how many games you see it. We fight for 100 wins. I am happy especially for the players. They are the reason we won 100 games.”

Man City, who won the Premier League the previous two seasons, are struggling in the ongoing 2019-20 edition. They are currently placed third on the points table, 14 points behind leaders Liverpool.
