KEY POINTS

  • Manchester United had a field day in its win against Leeds United
  • Paul Pogba got four assists, while Bruno Fernandes achieved a hat-trick
  • The Red Devils visit Southampton next on August 22

Manchester United fans are surely happy with their team’s performance as the Red Devils kicked off their run to the top of the English Premier League title with a 5-1 win against Leeds United.

Here are some key takeaways from the win.

Pogba shines at midfield

Paul Pogba remains unfazed with the transfer rumors surrounding him as he was the key component in the club’s dominant victory.

The French national had an opportunity to score the first goal early in the game but failed to capitalize on a one-versus-one situation with his shot going wide to the left of the post.

Pogba redeemed himself just before halftime as his perfectly-placed lob found Bruno Fernandes for the goal.

The two would connect for another goal, allowing Fernandes to finish the game with a hat-trick.

Pogba’s magic touch would later find 19-year-old Mason Greenwood and Fred for two more assists, capping off a perfect day at Old Trafford.

Manchester United turns on the pace

The Red Devils relied on their high-pace offense to ensure that Leeds United was kept to playing on the defense.

Two minutes into the match, Manchester United was already searching for scoring opportunities and they found one in Scott McTominay, who had his shot blocked by center-back Liam Cooper.

Four minutes later, McTominay tried to set up Greenwood for a screamer, but that was also saved by Illan Meslier.

Leeds United also had scoring opportunities of their own early in the match as they were able to penetrate the Manchester United defense thanks to Raphinha and Rodrigo, but the ball was deflected outside for a corner.

This was pretty much how much the game went as Manchester United took complete control of the midfield, despite the fact that Leeds United was the clear winner on the defensive side with 23 tackles and 14 interceptions compared to the Red Devils’ six and eight respectively.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s main tactic for this match was to capitalize on their strength at midfield and to push the pace for all 90 minutes, and they were able to execute the game plan perfectly.

Looking ahead to Southampton

Manchester United will next be facing Southampton next Sunday, August 22, at St. Mary’s Stadium.

New acquisitions Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho are expected to be given more opportunities going into the fixture.

Varane’s signing was made official prior to the Leeds United match, while Sancho subbed in for Daniel James at the 77th minute.

Solskjaer will have a ton of pieces for this match and he might take a chance on experimenting with his roster of talent moving forward before they face Liverpool in a marquee matchup on October 24.

"There could be more rotation. They will be fresher. You have to have a big and strong squad to be competitive in this league. It's the best league in the world,” said Solskjaer after the victory against Leeds United.
