Originally settled by the French in 1778, Port Victoria is situated on the northeastern side of Mahé Island, the main island of the archipelago. With a population of just 25,000, Port Victoria is Africa's smallest capital and is serviced by the Seychelles International Airport. Mahé, along with satellite islands Praslin and La Digue, form a cluster of inner islands that are the cultural and economic hub of the nation. In total, there are 115 islands that occupy a land area of 455km2 in the western Indian Ocean between 4 and 10 degrees south of the equator.
