This Saturday, the Powerball jackpot reached an estimated $153 million and the number continues to grow as there were no winners. The winning numbers for Jan. 21 were 23-25-45-52-67 with the Powerball of 02.

Powerball drawings are held every Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. EST. It is played in 44 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Players can purchase Powerball tickets for $2. Each ticket guarantees one series of numbers for a drawing. To increase the odds, players can purchase as many tickets as they want. People can select their own number combination or let a computer pick for them.

According to the Multi-State Lottery Association, which operates the Powerball game, 75 percent of winning tickets are selected when the numbers are picked by a computer.

Ticket sales end at least an hour prior to the official draw.

How to win the Jackpot:

In order to score the Jackpot prize, a player has to have selected all the five white-numbered balls pulled from a group of 69 balls and the red Powerball, which is selected from a group of 26 red balls.

Whenever there is no winner for the Jackpot, the total continues to grow. The largest lotto jackpot awarded in U.S. history was set in 2016 that was worth nearly $1.6 billion.

Powerball gives two options to the winners to collect their prize, by collecting the full cash sum — after taxes, and accepting the prize money over a 29-year annual payment plan, according to the Powerball website.

“The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are approximately 1 in 25,” the Powerball site reads.
