KEY POINTS

  • Zlatan Ibrahimovic suffers untimely injury
  • Ibrahimovic likely done playing football
  • Ibrahimovic may not get new contract after current season

Football season has not yet started but there are players now getting injured. The forced break resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic should have bought players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic time to heal. But based on recent reports, it appears the 38-year-old striker may be done for the rest of the season.

According to Sky Sports, the Swedish striker may have sustained a possible Achilles injury after taking a shot during training on Monday. He is currently undergoing scans for a suspected snapped Achilles tendon injury. It is the same issue that forced Ibrahimovic to miss games in January and February. Complicating matters is that his contract is due to expire at the end of the season. AC Milan has an option to extend his contract by another 12 months but his injury may force I Rossoneri to think twice.

Though it has yet to be known how long Ibrahimovic will be out, Achilles injuries take time to heal. Factoring in his age (38), it may make no sense to sign him to a contract with a looming possibility he may not be able to play at all. Since joining the Italians, Ibrahimovic has scored three goals.

During the lockdown, the Swedish football player returned home where he trained with Hammarby. He bought nearly 25 percent of the Stockholm-based club. He trained with the team to keep himself in shape with Italy under lockdown. Little has been known on his future plans but the recent injury may have been the last straw.

The kind of injury that Ibrahimovic suffered normally takes a whole season to recover. Making matters worse is that his age could also play a factor in the healing process. Things are not looking good for Ibrahimovic since coming over from LA Galaxy in 2019. Medical tests may provide a better insight into his condition but critics are branding it "a long stop."

It is an unfortunate development for Ibrahimovic who would have loved to end the season on a high note. Though there were rumors of him possibly leaving San Siro, this was not the way he wanted it to happen.

Serie A action has been on hold since Mar. 9. A decision on the resumption of play is set to be discussed on Thursday. AC Milan is seventh in the Italian TIM Serie A table with 36 points. They are just 3 points behind Napoli (39) and barely ahead of Hella Verona (35).
