  • Onana reveals plans of leaving AFC Ajax
  • Onana open to returning to Barca
  • Multiple teams interested in Cameroonian goalkeeper

Andre Onana of AFC Ajax remains under contract until 2022. However, it appears that any time from here and then, the Cameroonian is planning to take the next big step in his football career. The goalkeeper has attracted interest from several teams and it appears he is nearing a move to one of them soon.

Onana said in a report from Omnisport that he is ready to make a move out of Ajax. However, he backpedals a bit, explaining that he is grateful for the opportunity but later on admits that he is ready to take the next step while also admitting that he does have ambitions he intends to reach.

"It was five great years here, but now my time has come to take a step. We made that appointment last year," Onana said. "I don't yet know what will happen, but my ambitions and agreements are clear."

At least three teams are interested in taking Onana in. That includes Barcelona, Chelsea, and Tottenham. But seeing how the league and clubs are trying to figure out how to cover losses due to the COVID-19, it may be in the best interest of the 24-year-old to wait until next year at the earliest. Things are bound to change once the coronavirus is in the clear and clubs can recover lost revenue.

But of the teams mentioned, it appears Barca is in the lead. Onana is not ruling out a return to his former club where he holds close ties with president Josep Maria Bartomeu and the coaches.

"It's hard to say because with FC Barcelona, I am still in very good relations with the president, the coaches," Onana said to Canal+ Afrique.

If Ajax and Onana cannot find ways to finish their current pact, the transfer fee to get the Cameroonian is at £30-35million. However, there are things to consider if he is to return to Barcelona. For one, he will have to compete for the goalkeeping spot against Marc-Andre Ter Stegen. Ter Stegen is currently negotiating for a salary increase reportedly worth £250,000 per week. If this materializes, he would become one of the highest-paid players at the Nou Camp. Only Lionel Messi earns more than him.

But as mentioned earlier, Barcelona could be one of the teams tightening their financial spending. If Ter Stegen wants bigger pay, it could be the opening Onana is waiting for.
