  • Quique Setien awaits his fate following failure to win La Liga title
  • FC Barcelona may have a new coach as early as August
  • Quique Setien has lost vote of confidence of Barca players

Quique Setien admitted that his days as FC Barcelona manager are numbered. The 61-year-old appeared ready to face the consequences following Blaugrana's loss to Osasuna. That setback dashed all hope of the club winning its third consecutive top-flight crown. Adding insult to injury, Real Madrid officially made sure of that when Los Blancos won over Villareal, 2-1.

Barca found itself in a precarious situation with their chances of winning the La Liga title not entirely in their hands. Setien's future hung in the balance but that loss was the knockout blow. They needed to win to keep their hopes alive.

It was the fourth title for Real Madrid. Now, all Barcelona can hope for is the Champions League. But the notable thing to consider there is that Setien may no longer be around in August when European football resumes, Goal.com reported.

"I hope to be the Barcelona coach in the Champions League but I don't know," Setien told reporters.

Further placing Setien in the hot set is the displeasure of Lionel Messi. The Argentine football player was pretty upset by the turn of events, in disbelief that they made it easy for Real Madrid to win back the La Liga title.

"If we want to win the Champions League, we have to change a lot. If we continue like this, we will lose the game against Napoli," Messi said in a post-match interview with Movistar + via Goal.com.

These were strong words coming from the 33-year-old forward and Setien understands where he is coming from. However, the Barca coach bats that the club also fell prey to a string of bad luck on certain occasions.

"I agree with Messi on some things," Setien said. "We have to do self-criticism and if we don't do it, it will cost us anything we want to do."

Setien has been under fire following a reported fallout between the coaching staff and Barca players. Winning the La Liga title would have quashed that belief. But with the recent developments, it appears that his future now hangs in the balance.

Setien took over from Ernesto Valverde back in January. The tense moments reportedly began following Barcelona's 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo, Marca reported.
