Much is being made of a rumored rift between Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, but a shocking report in Vanity Fair claims that any tensions in the royal family actually have to do with problems that stem from Prince William and Prince Harry’s own relationship.

According to Vanity Fair, The Duchess of Cambridge and Duchess of Sussex actually get along fine, despite their lack of things in common, and the tensions that allegedly exist between them and their husbands, which have allegedly led to the decision that Prince Harry and his wife would leave Kensington Palace and move to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, all stem from the brothers themselves.

“Kate and Meghan are very different people and they don’t have a lot in common but they have made an effort to get along,” a source told the magazine. “Any issues are between the brothers.”

Most shockingly, the biggest claim about the brothers and their alleged fallout comes from how Prince William reportedly didn’t welcome his brother’s future wife into the fold after their engagement. A mutual friend of the two told VF that the fallout actually began last Christmas, and things were only resolved when their father, Prince Charles, reportedly stepped in.

“Harry felt William wasn’t rolling out the red carpet for Meghan and told him so. They had a bit of a fall out which was only resolved when Charles stepped in and asked William to make an effort. That’s when the Cambridges invited the Sussexes to spend Christmas with them,” the source said.

In addition, Harry has become less reliant on his sibling and sister-n-law, because he’s trying to become his own person—and that may be the real crux of the split.

“Two years ago the idea of Harry leaving Kensington Palace was unthinkable but a lot has changed,” a source said. “He wants to be his own person not in William’s shadow.”
