Princess Diana comforted herself with a joke after her split from Prince Charles was made official.

Princess Diana was devastated when she and Prince Charles broke up. When their divorce was finalized, she called a close friend over the phone and cried.

“I remember when she got her decree absolute from Charles, she called me up in tears. I said ‘You’ll be fine,’” Princess Diana’s friend Nish Joshi said.

It took some time for Princess Diana to compose herself. When she did, she comforted herself with a joke about the $26 million that she would receive as divorce settlement.

“Then after a moment she collected herself and said, ‘Well, I suppose £21million is not bad for an ex-nanny,’ which I thought was cute,” Joshi continued.

Princess Diana was a nanny before she married the heir apparent. She loved Prince Charles and didn’t want to divorce him. However, she was forced to do so because the Queen advised them to just part ways for good due to their unhappy marriage.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana did not divorce until four years after they announced their split. So there were times when they still attended royal engagements like husband and wife.

According to Princess Diana, it was difficult because they rode in the same car and shook the same hands. Prince Charles would do the speech and she did the handshaking. But then Prince Charles was eager to move on from her, so he decided to stop doing engagements with her.

“Then my husband decided that we do separate engagements, which was a bit sad for me, because I quite liked the company,” Princess Diana said. “But, there again, I didn’t have the choice.”

Petronella Wyatt recalled a dinner where she spoke with Princess Diana and Kerry Packer. According to her, the dinner was held at the Ritz after Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ split.

During their outing, Princess Diana was very jolly and was unfussed by etiquette. She also talked about her two boys, Prince William and Prince Harry, as well as her newfound friendship with Prince Charles, which reportedly made her happy.

When they asked Princess Diana what she would do if she could live her life again, the People’s Princess said that she would “redo” her marriage with Prince Charles. Wyatt said that even after the Prince and Princess of Wales’ split, Princess Diana remained “a little in love” with her ex-husband.
