Prince Charles made Princess Diana sad with one of his decisions about doing engagements together.

The Prince and Princess of Wales did not divorce until four years later since they announced their split, which was partly due to Princess Diana’s reluctance to end their marriage. Even after their split, they did similar engagements together until the heir apparent decided to stop making public appearances with his ex-wife.

“So basically we were a married couple doing the same job, which is very difficult for anyone, and more so if you’ve got all the attention on you,” Princess Diana said in an interview with Martin Bashir.

According to Princess Diana, it was very difficult because, in that situation, they rode in the same car and shook the same hands. Prince Charles would often do the speeches while she did the handshaking. But Prince Charles decided to end their teamwork for good.

“Then my husband decided that we do separate engagements, which was a bit sad for me, because I quite liked the company,” she added. “But, there again, I didn’t have the choice.”

Bashir asked Princess Diana if it wasn’t her decision to do royal engagements on her own. The People’s Princess said, “Not at all, no.”

Clearly, Princess Diana was fine doing royal engagements alongside Prince Charles, but he wasn’t fine with it anymore. There were claims that the Prince of Wales got jealous with his first wife because she overshadowed his popularity.

In a previous interview, Prince Charles said that his wife would have a hard job and will always be in his shadow. According to historian Piers Brendon, the future king wanted his wife to complement him like a “toy.”

Unfortunately, Princess Diana was not like that. Thus, their union was a “tragic mismatch.” Unexpectedly, the Princess of Wales gained more supporters than the Prince of Wales to the point that he couldn’t understand why the people were more inclined to meet Princess Diana than him.

Princess Diana felt that the royal family only approved of her because she was a virgin. Prior to her, Prince Charles dated her older sister. Many believed that the members of the Firm also didn’t approve of Camilla Parker Bowles for the same reason – she was deemed a woman with experience.
