  • Sony finally unveils the hardware specs of its much-awaited PlayStation 5
  • The upcoming gaming console boasts better memory and high-end audio engine
  • PS5 is also expected to be comparably faster than PS4

On Wednesday, Sony finally unveiled the much-awaited details of its upcoming and most-advanced gaming console: the PlayStation 5.

Lead system architect Mark Cerny gave a deep and detailed explanation of what’s to come for all gamers from Sony – highlighting the massive difference of PS5 to its predecessors as the company shows their vision for the next generation of gaming.

While the official release date of the console and its retail price are yet to be revealed, the full hardware specifications are now available for everyone to salivate.

Here are the specs, per Sony:

  • CPU: Eight x86-64-AMD Ryzen Zen 2 cores (16 threads); Variable frequency at up to 3.5 GHz
  • GPU: AMD Radeon RDNA 2-based graphics engine; Ray Tracing Acceleration; Variable frequency, up to 2.23 GHz (10.3 TFLOPS)
  • System Memory: 16 GB GDDR6 / 256-bit; 448GB/s Bandwidth
  • SSD: 825 GB; 5.5GB/s Read Bandwidth (Raw)
  • PS5 Game Disc: Ultra HD Blu-ra, up to 100GB/disc
  • Video Out: Support of 4K 120Hz TVs, 8K TVs, VRR (specified by HDMI ver.2.1)
  • Audio: “Tempest” 3D AudioTech

With this reveal, International Business Times noted three key features of the new PS5 should excite avid PlayStation fans.

Faster Loading Time

Thanks to the shift to SSD storage, PS5 promises less loading time and more seamless gameplay. This would especially noticeable in large game-worlds.

To put this in a better perspective, per The Verge, PS5 will only need less than a second to load two gigabytes of data. The target, however, is to load at least five gigabytes of data in a second.

For what it’s worth, PS4 needs around 20 seconds to load a single gigabyte of data.

Improved Graphics

The use of SSD would dramatically improve graphics, and the CPU running at 3.5 GHz and 2.23 GHz, respectively, would help deliver powerful graphics.

Of course, the CPU and GPU won’t always run at that level. However, as Cerny told EuroGamer.net, it is only a minor problem that will not have a huge impact on the overall performance and display of the console.

Hardcore Audio Fidelity

Perhaps the most amazing and biggest aspect of the reveal, PS5’s Tempest engine is taking audio experience to a whole new level to give players a more holistic experience.

As noted in their blog, the 3D audio brought by their new engine will “offer a greater sense of presence and locality.” As an example, the developers boast that gamers can actually hear the raindrops falling and hitting different surfaces around the player.

It could also be helpful in locating enemies around the player!

While visuals are a priority, taking the all-around approach could work wonders in the overall gaming experience.
