KEY POINTS

  • Rafael Nadal recently lost in the first round of Cincinnati Open
  • He is next scheduled to compete in the US Open
  • The New York Grand Slam is set to begin on Aug. 29

Rafael Nadal gave a modest reply when he was asked what is the "most interesting thing" about him.

In a video shared by the official Instagram account of Western & Southern Open, players were asked to reveal 'the most interesting thing' about them. While Coco Gauff, John Isner, Paula Bodosa, and Petra Kvitova answered, Nadal shrugged his shoulders as he couldn't think of anything.

Being his humble self, the 22-time Grand Slam winner said he doesn't like to talk about himself.

"I don't know. I don't like to talk about myself too much. I've never liked it. I don't know," said Nadal.

Returning from an abdominal injury that had forced him to withdraw from Wimbledon just ahead of his semi-final clash against Nick Kyrgios, Nadal suffered an opening-round exit from Cincinnati Masters.

Had Nadal won the tournament, he would have reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings, pushing Daniil Medvedev down to No. 2. The Spaniard has another shot at the top rank at the US Open, the calendar year's final Grand Slam, that is due to begin on Aug. 29 at Flushing Meadows.

He also hinted that retirement is not on his mind at present. In a social media post, he said he is hoping to return to Cincinnati Open next year.

"Thank you @cincytennis for everything. Sad to leave soon. Hope to see you all next year !!!" Nadal wrote in an Instagram post.

After losing to Croatia's Borna Coric in a battle that lasted for nearly three hours in Cincinnati, Nadal said it was "difficult to take a lot of positive things" from the clash.

"It's difficult to take a lot of positive things, but I need to improve. I need to practise. I need to return better. I need days [on the court], and that's the truth. Obviously, I had my chances in the beginning. In the tie-break I had two important chances with two set points that I played terrible with two more-or-less easy shots," Nadal told reporters after the game, according to ATP.

"Obviously I didn't play my best match. [It is] something that can happen. Historically this tournament has been difficult for me. So coming back from a tough period of time, [it is] something that's easy to accept and easy to say congrats to Borna, that he played better," added Nadal during the press conference.
