KEY POINTS

  • Real Madrid recently won their 34th La Liga title
  • Karim Benzema has been one of the best players for Real Madrid
  • President Florentino Perez shared that the club will not be making any big signings over the summer

The president of Real Madrid Florentino Perez shared that the dominant display of his club should have star player Karim Benzema as this year’s Ballon D’Or winner. To add to this, Perez also emphasized that the team is not looking into signing a player with a big contract over the summer.

The moment the games resumed after the coronavirus suspension, it was apparent that the league was already in Real Madrid’s control. The manner of how Real Madrid was able to adjust to every challenge in front of them should prove enough how capable their team is in competition. Within weeks of dominating their opponents, Real Madrid finally emerged as this year’s La Liga champions with how easily they took care of Villarreal.

Most of their success can be attributed to how Karim Benzema once again stepped up for Zinedine Zidane. Per Goal.com, Perez believes that he’s worthy enough to be called this year’s best player.

“Benzema should be the Ballon d’Or,” Perez said.

Scoring has never been an issue for Benzema as this season alone he has played in 36 games and is second in the league with 21 goals. While Lionel Messi holds the top spot with 23 goals, Benzema has translated these scoring outbursts to more wins.

“I have not seen any player have as good a year as him,” Perez continued.

Given how tough Real Madrid is now and how Benzema has been on such as hot streak, Perez believes it is prudent to stay away from making signing large summer deals.

“The situation is really bad. It's hard to ask the players to take a pay cut to help deal with it and then make signings. That can wait,” Perez shared.

The current global landscape has drastically changed with the economic effects of the pandemic. Everyone has been affected financially with how COVID-19 has negatively impacted the world. Rest assured, once everything is stabilized, teams such as Real Madrid would return in top form when it comes to recruiting high profile talent.

“Madrid will sign the best again when the situation changes,” Perez shared.

It will be interesting to see how Real Madrid will play in the coming years with stars such as Benzema still playing on top of their game. For now, the team is focused on finishing the remaining game against Leganes for a sweep of the post-suspension games.
